As I continue this blog for 2024 I have had to implement some changes. For the last two years I have posted full-size high resolution images of our adventures. We’ll, I managed to exceed my life-time allocation of space on Wix using this approach. To get myself out of memory-space jail I have moved all of 2022 and 2023 into an off-line archive. Going forward I will post reduced quality images in an attempt to make it through this very action packed year.
Our big adventure in 2024 is a trip on St. Florian from Sidney, BC to Alaska and back with Phil and Annette Davies (Kinship) and Bill and Sally Andrew (Second Verse). We untie lines in Sidney, BC on May 10th so stay tuned and follow along.
Brad and Marya Budinger are members of the Oakland Yacht Club. They joined OYC in 2013 with their Carver SuperSport 42 powerboat Seaductress. In 2022 they traded the go-fast boat life for a slower pace on St. Florian, a 2008 Ocean Alexander 50 Classico. St. Florian is a trawler-style boat with an average speed of 7 to 8 knots. She is well equipped for the Pacific Northwest and long range cruising.
Brad is a Staff Commodore of OYC, serving on the Board of Directors and going through the flags in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He was OYC Commodore in 2020. Brad is a retired Fremont Fire Captain and is filling retirement with boating adventures. The boat name is a nod to Brad’s profession. St. Florian was a Roman warrior who formed the first fire brigades and is today considered the patron saint of firefighters.
Marya Budinger (actually Andrepont for those who really know her) is a retired Lockheed Martin engineer.
For Phil and Annette Davies, it all started with a boat show, we went, saw some nice boats, thought we’d like one, then we had one, then it snowballed. We found Kinship in 2018, she is a Selene 47 Ocean Trawler with a length overall of 53’ and a cruising speed of 7kts. We enjoyed initially cruising Puget Sound & the San Juan Islands. In 2019 we brought her to the San Francisco Bay where we lived and cruised the Bay Area from Oakland Yacht Club until 2022. Phil was Commodoore of OYC in 2019. In April 2022 Phil, along with Brad and another friend Jim took Kinship back North to Sidney, Vancouver Island. In summer 2022 we cruised North to the Broughtons & Desolation Sound, spending almost 4 months on Kinship. For 2023 we stayed further South, cruising the San Juans, Canadian Gulf Islands and the highlight being Princess Louisa Inlet. In 2024 we head North to South East Alaska….heading as far North as Skagway and West to Sitka. We joined Chesapeake Yacht Club in 2020 after moving to Edgewater, MD, and have kept our Sabre 42 at CYC on South Dock.
Bill and Sally Andrew purchased S/V Second Verse, a 2004 Hylas 54, in 2018. It was at Semiahmoo, WA and they spent two summers sailing in the Pacific Northwest before bringing the boat to Oakland Yacht Club in 2019. In 2020 they sailed south in hopes that the Baja-HaHa would happen, but Covid prevented the official rally, so they stayed in LA and enjoyed sailing the islands and coastal cities of Southern California. They were part of the 2021 and 2022 Baja-HaHa rallies and truly enjoyed sailing the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Mexico for two winters. In 2023 they brought the boat back to Alameda and the two just spent a couple of weeks bringing it up the coast to Sidney, B.C.Bill grew up racing out of San Francisco Yacht club on his family’s big boats, and Sally grew up sailing little boats on a little lake in upstate New York. When they are not on Second Verse, they spend summers on Galway Lake (upstate NY), and winters traveling and snow skiing near their home in Reno, NV. They are currently members of Oakland Yacht Club and the Galway Sailing CLub.
