Our final week of cruising for the 2024 season takes us to Vancouver

maryabud

9/20/2024 We have one more week of cruising before we take St. Florian back to Van Isle Marina and button her up for the winter. We have a few more days with Vince and Suzy before they need to head home. We decided to head into downtown Vancouver for a few days. We have never been there but we’re looking forward to experiencing this big city.

9/20/2024 After saying goodbye to cousin Teri, we left Powell River and headed to Secret Cove. This was a good half-way spot to Vancouver. Frustratingly, we blew out the stern thruster AGAIN! That is a winter task to see if the mechanic can figure out what is happening.

9/21/2024 We were able to secure a reservation in Fishermen’s Wharf Marina in downtown Vancouver. We were only able to get one side-tie spot so Legacy and St. Florian rafted up again. We are getting pretty good at this operation.

9/21/2024 We took a walk from the marina to the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The museum was built around the ship St. Roch.

RCMPV St. Roch is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police schooner, the first ship to completely circumnavigate North America, and the second vessel to transit the Northwest Passage. She was the first ship to complete the Northwest Passage in the west to east direction (Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean), using the same route that Amundsen on the sailing vessel Gjøa had traversed east to west, 38 years earlier. This is the only dining table. I don’t think they all ate at the same time.

The toilet sounds like an adventure

Brad replaced the stern thruster coupler - again - while we were in Vancouver. We found a replacement coupler at a marine store in Vancouver, but it wasn’t near the marina. We used the Uber package delivery service to get the part shipped across town, allowing us to avoid a 45 minute taxi ride each way. So happy this service exists!

One more time fixing the stern thruster coupler

9/23/2024 Time to head home, our next stop was Sucia Island for the night. This is our last night with Vince and Suzy. It is a bit sad to leave them, but we have many years of cruising in our future.
