7/6/2024 - 7/8/2024 We left Tenakee Springs on July 5th and stopped in Appleton Cove on Baranof Island for the night, then on to Sitka to rejoin with Second Verse who had spent the Fourth of July in Pelican. Sitka is the biggest city we have visited since stopping in Juneau. The permanent population of Sitka is about 8,500, but can be inundated by 12,000 to 15,000 cruise ship visitors on any day. Luckily for us there are no cruise ships here of Saturday or Sunday. We had three beautiful, sun-filled days to explore and do boat chores.
As part of Russia, it was known as New Archangel. The current name Sitka (derived from Sheetʼká, a contraction of the Tlingit Shee Atʼiká) means "People on the Outside of Baranof Island", whose Tlingit name is Sheetʼ-ká Xʼáatʼl. Russian explorers settled Old Sitka in 1799, naming it Fort of Archangel Michael. Sitka was the site of the transfer ceremony for the Alaska Purchase on October 18, 1867. The Alaska Purchase was the purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire to the United States for a sum of $7.2 million in 1867. (Ref: Wikipedia)
