Wrangell, Thoms Place, Meyers Chuck, Ketchikan, and Pond Bay

7/22/2024 - 7/28/2024 We really have started our journey south. We left Petersburg with clean laundry and full refrigerators and stopped in Wrangell to visit the Anan Wildlife Viewing area (see last blog post) and to pick up guests. Phil’s sister Liz and husband Keith joined Kinship in Wrangell after they spent two weeks on a National Geographic cruise through southeast Alaska. We celebrated Annette’s birthday this week along with Brad and Marya’s 33rd wedding anniversary.

Happy Birthday Annette!

7/23/2024 We enjoyed an amazing day at the Anan Wildlife viewing area in the Tongass National Forest. See my last post for those adventures. While the six of us were looking at bears, Phil’s sister Liz and husband Keith rented electric bikes and toured Wrangell.

7/25/2024 We left Wrangell and spent the night anchored in Thoms Place State Marine Park. This was a very protected and calm anchorage. We celebrated Annette’s birthday here with everyone aboard St. Florian. Sally baked a beautiful four layer cake with chocolate frosting. It isn’t polite to tell a lady’s age so you must look at the cake to decide which birthday we celebrated.

Sally baked a beautiful cake for Annette’s birthday. Fireman Brad was not in favor of lighting ALL of the candles.

Keith caught his first fish, a baby halibut. Then let it go!

Step one for crab dip: Phil caught two “keepers” in Thom Place

Step two towards crab dip: clean and cook

7/26/2024 An early six am start had us headed to Meyers Chuck. Our early start paid off and we were able to get all three boats onto the public float. This allowed us to have a bit of a dock party where we shared appetizers and enjoyed some sunshine.

I forgot to take a picture of step three for crab dip, but step four (eat) caused it to vanish.

7/27/2024 Our next stop was one night in Ketchikan. We stopped here on the way up and really enjoyed the town. Liz and Keith had not been here so we wanted to give them the opportunity to visit this very cute town. Our second visit was much quieter. Brad and I were both fighting off a bit of a cold, and coupled with the rain we opted to stay in for the night. It was our 33rd wedding anniversary and we still like each other enough to enjoy spending time together. Brad cooked up some of the rock fish he caught in Glacier Bay. We watched a couple of episodes of House of Cards (we didn’t watch it in 2013 when it originally aired) and stayed dry. I am surprised, yet not surprised how the political key topics have not changed.

Rock fish in a butter caper sauce was a perfect Anniversary meal for us

7/28/2024 Today we moved to Pond Bay to stage for Monday’s crossing of the Dixon Entrance back into Canada. This can be an uncomfortable leg if the weather and seas aren’t calm. Monday is the best day unless we want to sit for another week. Liz and Keith have flights to catch to continue their vacation and so schedule says Monday is our day.

We left Ketchikan in the rain (notice the float plane coming in for a landing)

It is definitely still busy season for cruise ships in Alaska

Kinship and Second Verse at anchor in Pond Bay staged for tomorrow’s Dixon Entrance crossing. The sun is trying to come out.
